The Earth Is Spinning Faster, And That’s a Bigger Deal Than You Think

In a quietly startling development, scientists have confirmed that Earth’s rotation is speeding up. In recent observations, the planet is completing its daily spin 1.3 to 1.5 milliseconds faster than usual. That might seem minuscule, but the implications are anything but small—especially in a world that relies on precision timing for everything from GPS to internet networks.

For the first time in history, international timekeepers may need to subtract time instead of add it. This adjustment—called a negative leap second—would help sync atomic time with Earth’s slightly faster spin. The last time we made a leap second adjustment was in 2016, and even that was to add time. Now, we may have to do the opposite.

So what’s causing this sudden shift?

Some scientists point to melting glaciers, which redistribute Earth’s mass and can subtly alter its rotation. Others believe it could be linked to core dynamics, tectonic activity, or even Moon-Earth gravitational interactions. In short: Earth’s internal and external balance is changing.

But here’s where it gets more serious—this change isn’t just a cool fact to drop at brunch. It could cause problems for technology that relies on exact timekeeping, such as:
